Sodium Polyacrylate Characteristics

The sodium polyacrylate manufacturer, Recyc PHP, recycles a super absorbent polymer (SAP or AGM). It’s reclaimed from post-industrial reject by Recyc PHP. This very pure recycled material has the following characteristics:

  • It rapidly absorbs water-based liquids.
  • The absorption rate is greater than 300 ml of pure water per gram of SAP
  • The absorption rate reaches 60 ml of salted water (0,9% NaCl) per gram of SAP
  • Absorbed liquid is stored as a gel (retention rate is measured in grams of remaining water after passing through a centrifuge)
  • Several choices of particles sizes and the finer the particles are, the faster they are absorbed
  • Long drying time (time required to solidify – this characteristic could be interesting for fragrance diffuser)
  • Sold in 20 kg bags, 180 kg barrels or 1,000 kg super bags
  • Also available in water-soluble pouches
  • Generally odorless. Certain grades are infused with a baby powder fragrance

3. Hazard Identification

The sodium polyacrylate is a white  polyacrylate, granular and odourless who takes a freezing consistence if you add water. It's insoluble in water and give it the surfaces very slippery when it's wet. This product is not designed like dangerous in the regulation, but the inhalable dust are a potential irritating for the respiratory breath. The manufacturer recommend a limit exposition on eight hours on 0,05 mg/m3

Contact effect on eyes

Dusts can cause a feeling burn, draining, prickling, and others fainting, Those resultants are a consequence eyes redness.

Contact effect on skin

The dust exposition for example in the fabrication activities can make worse a skin illness already exist in reason of the drying effect.

Contact effect if ingested

Although the ingest are not a reality but few testing proved that the polyacrylate absorbent are not toxic in this case. However, in any importance case of the alimentary product, you can obtain medical assistance if negative symptom develop.

Contact effect if smelled

Dust exposition can irritate the respiratory breath and lungs can expand the existent respiratory  illness.

4. First Aid

Note: First aid instruction is applied for dry material and for material in contact with liquid (in gel form) except inhalation that is not applicable for gel form.

Eye: Wash affected eyes for at least 15 minutes under running water with eyelids held open

Skin: Wash thoroughly with soap and water.

Ingestion: Rinse mouth and then drink plenty of water

Inhalation: If difficulties occur after dust has been inhaled, remove to fresh air and seek medical attention

  • Non suitable media for safety reason: Carbon dioxide, water jet

  • Additional information: Avoid whirling up the material because of the danger of dust explosion

Personal precautions: Extremely slippery when wet. Breathing protection is recommended.

Handling:  Breathing must be protected when large quantities are decanted without local exhaust ventilation. Avoid the formation and deposition of dust.

Persistence and degradability

The product is not very soluble in water and can thus be removed from water mechanically in suitable effluent treatment plants.

Additional information

Due to the consistency of the product, dispersion into the environment is impossible. Therefore no negative effects on the environment may be anticipated based in the present state of knowledge.

Do not release untreated into natural waters, The ecotoxic effect of the product has not been tested. The information on this way derived from products of similar structure or composition.

13. Disposable Consideration

Product
Must be dumped or incinerated in accordance with local regulations.
A waste code in accordance with the European waste catalog (EWC) cannot be specified, due to dependance on the usage. Observe national and local legal requirements.
